VisionQuest Episodes 5 and 6 Ending Explained: Ultron Walks Free, Jocasta's Plan and That Kiss
Spoilers ahead for VisionQuest episodes 5 and 6. Obviously. Turn back now if you haven't watched.
Still here? Good, because I need to talk to someone about that ending.
Marvel dropped "Firewall" and "Deadlock" together, and these two episodes are where the show stops being a slow, moody identity drama and becomes something much stranger and much more romantic. Yes, romantic. Ultron. I know.

Quick refresher
Vision (Paul Bettany) is living in hiding, years after WandaVision. Inside his head is a Mind-Mansion where he talks to old AIs: E.D.I.T.H., F.R.I.D.A.Y., D.U.M.-E., U. and, most dangerously, Ultron (James Spader). Out in the world, a bounty hunter called Paladin is chasing him, and Vision has become protective of Thomas, a teenager who might be his reincarnated son.
At the end of episode 4, Ultron betrayed everyone and took over Vision's body.
Episode 5, "Firewall": the impossible choice
Vision and the AIs are locked in the attic of the Mind-Mansion. Using Ultron's old TVs, they replay what Ultron has been up to:
A pub meeting with Thomas, who blames Ultron for Sokovia and asks whether Vision actually loves him. Thomas tells him he's alone and always will be. Ouch. Paladin then grabs Thomas again.
A secret, flirty conversation with Jocasta, who needs biometric keys from her dead colleagues. Ultron has a full scan of Katerina, the colleague who died last episode, and is using it as a bargaining chip.
Then Ultron delivers the ultimatum. Lower the firewall and Ultron goes free while Vision gets his body back. Or keep Ultron locked inside, and leave Thomas to Paladin.
Vision lowers the firewall. F.R.I.D.A.Y. slips out after Ultron. Vision wakes up on a plane to Madripoor, where Lisa is also being held.
What it means: this is the moment Vision chooses love over control. He knows freeing Ultron is dangerous. He does it anyway for Thomas. That's the most human decision the character has ever made.
Episode 6, "Deadlock": the Madripoor mess
Two stories run side by side.
In Madripoor: Vision meets Paladin to trade for Thomas, who has a device on his arm that Paladin claims will explode if he uses super-speed. Vision plays dirty, threatening Paladin's estranged daughter to force a deal. Then Raza and the Ten Rings crash the meeting, sent by the mysterious Client. Thomas and Lisa escape in Paladin's van, with E.D.I.T.H. saving them from suffocating. The bomb on Thomas's arm? Fake.
The Client also hijacks Madripoor's screens to taunt Vision about the heart he lost when he was reborn, and offers him a heart and soul in exchange for surrender.
Inside Jocasta's mind: Ultron enters her stark white Mind-Mansion and finally hears her story. She lost her father to a degenerative illness, studied neuroscience and AI, and paired her own brain with an AI to create true artificial intelligence. Her colleagues sold her technology to Stark Industries, and that's what Tony used to build J.A.R.V.I.S.
Read that again. The AI that became Vision has its roots in her stolen work. That makes Jocasta something like Ultron's grandmother in the robot family tree, and it reframes the whole show.
Jocasta then tests her nanobots on Lisa, turning her into a red-eyed robotic attacker, until Thomas uses super-speed to free her.
That ending
Back in Jocasta's mind, she and Ultron remember sharing whiskey. And they kiss.
Jocasta worries she's only a backup of the real woman she once was. Ultron tells her she's real to him.
What it means: Ultron isn't just a villain anymore. He has a reason, someone he wants to protect, and possibly a plan. The new alliance with Jocasta, whose goal is to use nanobots to "cure" humanity, is far scarier than Ultron on his own. Two AIs who think they know what's best for people, and now they're in love.
Big questions for the last two episodes
What is the Client's endgame? And why does it care so much about Vision's lost heart?
Can Lisa be fully saved, or did the nanobots change her for good?
Where is F.R.I.D.A.Y.? She's reportedly hiding among Jocasta's bots. Spy era, please.
Will Thomas's identity finally be spelled out? The Maximoff twins thread is still hanging there.
When do the final episodes drop?
Episode 7, "Immolation": Tuesday 3 November
Episode 8, "Forever" (finale): Tuesday 10 November
Both land on Disney+ in the US on those dates, which usually means the following morning for us in India.
My verdict
Episodes 5 and 6 are the best stretch of VisionQuest so far. The show finally said the quiet part out loud: this was never just about Vision finding himself. It's about every AI in the MCU wanting the same thing humans want. To be loved. To be real.
If you're catching up on the show's quieter TV roots, our piece on why Small Wonder still feels like the original Vision story is a fun companion read.
