Student of the Year: After Dark Looks Like Karan Johar Finally Took the Franchise Somewhere Interesting
I did not expect to be saying this, but I'm genuinely curious about a Student of the Year project.
Not because of the glossy campus, the dance numbers or the trophy. Because Karan Johar has done something I didn't see coming: he's taken the shiniest franchise in his catalogue and dragged it into the dark.
The trailer for Student of the Year: After Dark was launched this morning, and the series streams on JioHotstar from 13 November. Here's everything we know, and why I'm cautiously, hopefully in.
Wait, what is After Dark?
It's a web series spin-off, not a third film. Same world, same school, St Teresa's, but a completely different genre.
When Karan first teased it on the franchise's 14th anniversary, he described it like this: "Gritty, gory, unabashed and absolute madness!!!!" The first look showed Shanaya Kapoor going from laughing to a blood-stained, ghostlike figure. Reports describe the show as built around a competition, leaning into violence, mystery and rivalry rather than romance, with comparisons to Class and Euphoria being thrown around.
The jump from "Radha teri chunri" to "is that blood?" is huge. And honestly? That's what makes it interesting.

The cast
Shanaya Kapoor leads, in her OTT debut, and in a double role. Karan has credited her with a "powerful double-role performance". A first for the SOTY universe.
Manya Grover
Divik Sharma
Adi Malik
Abhinav Sharma
Deeya Damini
That's a cast of mostly fresh faces, which fits the franchise's whole history. The first film in 2012 introduced Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. The 2019 sequel launched Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria alongside Tiger Shroff. SOTY has always been a launchpad. After Dark keeps that tradition, just with fewer pastel blazers.
Behind the camera
Director: Reema Maya, who previously made the short drama Nocturnal Burger (2023). That's a deliberate choice: not a familiar mainstream Dharma name, but a filmmaker coming from short-form, independent work.
Produced by: Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment, Dharma's digital arm.
Platform: JioHotstar.
Episodes: not yet officially announced.
Why I'm actually excited
Three reasons.
1. Reinvention beats repetition. A third straight SOTY film would've been the safe, boring choice. Turning it into a thriller is the kind of risk I wish more Indian franchises took. It's world-building, not copy-pasting. (We just wrote about why brands and franchises are building lore instead of retelling stories. This is exactly that.)
2. Reema Maya at the helm. Handing a big, commercial franchise to a director from the short-film world is a signal. It says they want something that looks and feels different.
3. Shanaya's double role is a real swing. A debut lead in a double role, in a dark genre, is a much harder job than a love-triangle debut. If she pulls it off, it's a statement.
And what makes me nervous
I'll be honest. Gory and gritty is easy to promise in a teaser. Delivering real tension over a full season is much harder. Indian streaming has had plenty of "dark" shows that were just dimly lit.
There's also the Euphoria comparison problem. Every young-adult series wants to be Euphoria. Very few have its writing. If After Dark leans on aesthetics over story, people will notice within two episodes.
Let's hope for the best
We argued recently that the future of Karan's brand lies beyond the old Bollywood formula. After Dark looks like a step in exactly that direction.
St Teresa's after hours. A double role. A real director. Yes, I'll be pressing play on 13 November. Fingers crossed the lights stay off for the right reasons.
