Jailer 2 made an estimated ₹125.25 crore gross worldwide on its opening day, Thursday 15 October. That puts Nelson Dilipkumar's sequel ahead of the original Jailer and behind only Coolie in Rajinikanth's own record book.

The figures below come from trade tracking, not from Sun Pictures. The producers had not posted an official Day 1 number when this piece was written, and tracked totals moved a lot through Thursday night. Mid-evening estimates had India at around ₹45 crore net; by Friday morning that had settled near ₹60 crore. Treat everything here as the best available count, not the final word.

Update, 17 October: Day 2

Early tracker estimates for Friday put Jailer 2 at ₹37.10 crore net in India, a drop of about 38% from Thursday. That takes the two-day India net to roughly ₹96.80 crore and the worldwide gross to about ₹210.65 crore, with around ₹97 crore of that from overseas. Day 1 tallies were also revised slightly as final reports came in.

  • Tamil: ₹26.60 crore

  • Telugu: ₹7.25 crore

  • Hindi: ₹2.90 crore

  • Kannada: about ₹35 lakh

One wrinkle: the Tamil version fell harder (about 39%) than the Hindi one (about 17%). Hindi was starting from a much lower base, so this isn't a turnaround, but the Hindi version held better than its Day 1 numbers suggested it might. Saturday and Sunday will show whether Tamil Nadu bounces back.

The Day 1 split

  • India net: ₹59.70 crore from 16,599 shows

  • India gross: ₹70.25 crore

  • Overseas gross: ₹55 crore

  • Worldwide gross: ₹125.25 crore

  • Overall occupancy: about 55%

By language, Tamil carried the film: ₹43.35 crore net from 9,326 shows at roughly 71% occupancy. Telugu added ₹12.50 crore. Kannada, on just 110 shows, brought in ₹35 lakh.

Then there is Hindi. ₹3.50 crore. From 4,371 shows. At 22% occupancy.

The Hindi problem is not a footnote

Look at that again. The Hindi version had nearly half as many shows as the Tamil one and earned about one-twelfth of the money. Four out of five seats in those shows were empty.

Part of this is circumstance. Reports in the run-up to release pointed to a dispute between the makers and national multiplex chains over the gap between theatrical and digital release, and that friction reportedly hit screen access across the north. When the biggest chains aren't fully on board, a dubbed Tamil film has very little room to build momentum in the Hindi belt.

But the dispute doesn't explain the occupancy. A screen with 22% filled is a screen that got a show and still didn't sell. A sequel needs the Hindi audience to already care. On day one, it mostly didn't.

More shows, thinner shows

Here is the number nobody is putting in a headline. Compared with the first film's opening, Jailer 2's tracked India net is up about 23%, from ₹48.35 crore to ₹59.70 crore. Its show count is up about 122%, from 7,461 to 16,599.

Do the division and the average show earned roughly ₹3.6 lakh net this time, against roughly ₹6.5 lakh for Jailer in 2023. Tracker show counts across three years aren't perfectly comparable, and a wider release always dilutes the average. Still, a sequel that more than doubles its footprint while growing collections by a quarter is a film that went wide faster than demand did.

That is not a flop signal. It is a pacing signal. Day 2 and the first weekend will tell us whether Tamil Nadu keeps those 70% houses full, which is what decides the film's lifetime number.

Where Day 1 ranks

  • Coolie (2025): ₹65 crore India net, ₹151.10 crore worldwide. Still Rajinikanth's biggest worldwide opener.

  • Jailer 2 (2026): ₹59.70 crore India net, ₹125.25 crore worldwide.

  • 2.0 (2018): ₹60.25 crore India net, so Jailer 2 narrowly misses it at home but passes 2.0's reported ₹115 crore worldwide.

  • Jailer (2023): ₹48.35 crore India net, ₹96.36 crore worldwide.

The overseas share is the real story

₹55 crore of the ₹125 crore came from outside India. That is about 44% of the worldwide gross on day one. For readers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and the Gulf, this is your film as much as Chennai's, and the numbers show it. If Jailer 2 posts a strong overseas weekend, that share could matter more to its final ranking than anything the Hindi version does.

We tracked the pre-release build-up in our Jailer 2 advance booking breakdown, and the film's streaming economics in our piece on its record ₹160 crore OTT deal. The OTT deal is why the theatrical window fight matters so much: the longer the digital gap, the more the multiplexes are willing to play.

What about Jailer 3?

Some reports say the ending sets up a third film, and there is speculation about who returns. Neither Nelson nor Sun Pictures has announced Jailer 3, so we're not treating it as confirmed. We'll update this when there is an official word.
