This City Is Ours Series 2 Is Here, and the BBC Has Already Ordered Series 3

The BBC's biggest new drama of last year is back, and the broadcaster liked it so much it ordered a third series before the second had even aired.

This City Is Ours series 2 started on Sunday, 25 October, on BBC One and iPlayer. It was one of the UK's top searches this weekend.

Where we left off, and where it goes

Series 1 ended with Michael Kavanagh (James Nelson-Joyce) and Diana (Hannah Onslow) heading for Spain. Series 2 picks up right there. They make it to their new home, more in love than ever, and are almost immediately dragged back to answer questions about Ricardo's death.

Two new threats arrive:

• Felipe, a new Colombian contact, played by Álvaro Morte

• Ozzie Thompson, played by Shaun Evans, a newly released old-school gangster from Ronnie's past who wants compensation or revenge, whichever comes first

Back in Liverpool, a coup inside the Phelan firm throws the business into chaos.

If Morte's face is familiar, it should be. He was the Professor in Money Heist, a show with a huge following in India. Evans is best known as the young Inspector Morse in Endeavour, so playing a revenge-minded gangster is a sharp turn.

Sean Bean, who played crime boss Ronnie Phelan in series 1, was the show's big-name draw the first time round.

Why the BBC moved early

The numbers explain it. The first episode of series 1 was watched by nearly 8.5 million people, and it was the BBC's biggest new drama launch of 2025. Ordering series 3 ahead of time is rare for the BBC, and it signals the show is meant to run for years.

Creator Stephen Butchard said the team had been "determined not to drop the ball" after the reaction to series 1, and that he hoped the early commission meant they'd come close to delivering a better second run. Early UK reviews have been warm.
