Some songs you like. Some songs you feel. Mangal Rang is the second kind, and I've had it on loop since it dropped.

This song is soulful. And for the first time, Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi don't look like two stars cast as Ram and Sita. They look like Ram and Sita.

The song

Mangal Rang is the wedding song from Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, and the third track to come out of the film. It was released on YouTube on Sunday morning, 25 October.

  • Music: AR Rahman

  • Hindi lyrics: Dr Kumar Vishwas

  • Hindi vocals: Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal

  • Languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with ten singers in total

Rahman doesn't go for the obvious wedding-song energy here. There's no dhol-heavy, sangeet-ready drop. It's gentle, devotional and warm, the kind of song that sounds like it's been around for decades the first time you hear it. Arijit and Shreya together are a safe bet, sure, but the restraint in how they sing it is what makes it work. Kumar Vishwas's lyrics stay simple, which is exactly right for a song about two people, not a spectacle.

It sounds like a song that's been around for decades the first time you hear it.

The chemistry I didn't expect

The visuals move through the whole arc of their early story. Ram lifts and strings Shiva's bow at the swayamvar. Then the wedding, palace life, and finally the vanvaas, with the two of them setting up and decorating their cottage in the forest.

And here's the thing. The chemistry between Ranbir and Sai Pallavi is honestly way too good. Not "film couple" chemistry. Something quieter. There's a calm, a stillness, a sense that these two people are certain of each other. That's the aura you need to play Ram and Sita, and it's the one thing no amount of VFX or costume budget can fake.

Sai Pallavi especially. A lot was riding on this film for her, as we wrote when we looked at her Bollywood career and what Ramayana means for it. In Mangal Rang she doesn't perform divinity. She just has it. And Ranbir, who has had to fight a lot of noise about whether he was right for Ram, finally looks the part without trying too hard.

The look and feel

What the song does best is sell the world. The palace, the forest, the light, the colour palette of the wedding: it all feels like one consistent, considered universe. After months of debate around the film's visuals, this is the clearest sign yet that the makers know what kind of film they're making. Divine, but grounded. Grand, but human.

If you want the full who's-who of the cast and the mythology behind each role, our Ramayana cast explainer covers it. And if you're more of a Ravana person, Yash in the trailer is still a sight.

Ten days to go

Ramayana Part 1 releases worldwide on 5 November. The film is produced by Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios with DNEG and Yash's Monster Mind Creations, and stars Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.

I can't wait. If the film holds even half the feeling of this song, we're in for something special.
