Why Satish Kaushik Was a Legend: The Roles, the Films and the Friend Bollywood Still Misses
There's a kind of actor every Hindi film fan grew up with without ever quite noticing. The one who walks into a scene for two minutes and walks out with the whole film in his pocket.
Satish Kaushik was the king of that.

He's been on everyone's mind again this week, after Anil Kapoor met a contestant who looks strikingly like him on his show India Ke Top 1% and got visibly emotional. "Agar mera koi judwa bhai ban sakta hai, toh woh sirf Satish tha," Anil said: if I could have had a twin brother, it would only have been Satish. If you saw the clip and felt something, this one's for you.
Where he came from
Born on 13 April 1956 in Mahendragarh, Haryana, Kaushik trained at the National School of Drama and the Film and Television Institute of India. That's worth saying out loud, because people who only know him as "the funny guy" forget he came out of the most serious acting schools in the country. He was one of Haryana's great gifts to Hindi cinema, alongside the names in our list of film personalities from Haryana.
He started in theatre and on the writing side, and that's where the legend begins.
The roles you know (even if you don't know you know)
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)
Before most people knew his face, he was already in a cult classic. Kaushik co-wrote the dialogue for Kundan Shah's satire and played Ashok. Forty years on, it's still one of the sharpest comedies India has made.
Mr India (1987): Calendar
Ask anyone born in the 80s or 90s to name a Satish Kaushik role and this is the one. Calendar, the household's cook, was a supporting part in a superhero film, and he made it unforgettable. His name became a nickname in half the colonies in India.
Ram Lakhan (1989)
This one won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Comedian.
Saajan Chale Sasural (1996): Muthu Swamy
His second Filmfare Best Comedian win. Big, broad, loud and completely committed. Nobody else could have pulled off Muthu Swamy without it tipping into cringe.
Deewana Mastana (1997): Pappu Pager
In a film with Anil Kapoor, Govinda and Juhi Chawla at full volume, Pappu Pager still stands out. That's the Kaushik magic: the smaller the role, the bigger the impact.
The director people forget about
This is the part of his career that doesn't get enough credit. Satish Kaushik wasn't just an actor who directed one film for fun. He was a working, hit-making director.
Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993): his debut, a famously expensive flop that would have ended a lesser career
Prem (1995)
Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999): an Anil Kapoor–Kajol family drama that found its audience
Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai (2001)
Tere Naam (2003): the one. Salman Khan's hair, that soundtrack, that ending. A whole generation's heartbreak film
Kaagaz (2021): the true story of a man declared dead on paper, with Pankaj Tripathi, made late in his career and with real heart
He bounced back from one of the biggest flops of the 90s and went on to direct Tere Naam. That's not luck. That's craft.
Satish and Anil
You can't write about Satish Kaushik without writing about Anil Kapoor. They came up together, worked together across decades, Mr India, Ram Lakhan, Deewana Mastana, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, and stayed friends through all of it. When Anil calls him the twin he never had, it isn't a line for TV. You can see it on his face.
The goodbye
Satish Kaushik died of a heart attack in Gurugram on 9 March 2023. He was 66. One of his last big-screen appearances came after his death, as Jagjivan Ram in Kangana Ranaut's Emergency.
Here's why I think he was a legend, and not just "a good character actor". He never needed to be the hero. He made every hero look better, he made every film he was in more fun, and when he got behind the camera, he gave us films people still cry to. Bollywood has plenty of stars. It has very few Satish Kaushiks.
