Okay. The goddess is BACK.

If you watched Mookuthi Amman during the 2020 lockdown, you'll remember how much fun it was: Nayanthara as a goddess, comedy, a message about fake godmen, and a whole lot of heart. It went straight to OTT and people loved it.

Now Mookuthi Amman 2 is here, and this time it's on the big screen. Here's everything you need to know.

Release date: it's out now

Mookuthi Amman 2 released in cinemas on 6 November 2026, during the Diwali weekend, in Tamil and Telugu.

The big change: a new director

This is the part fans had the most questions about. The first film was co-directed by RJ Balaji, who also starred in it. For the sequel, Sundar C took over. Balaji has said he stepped away because of creative differences with the producers, and he was the one who suggested Sundar C.

So yes, the vibe is different. Sundar C is the man behind the Aranmanai horror-comedy franchise, so expect bigger, louder and more masala.

The cast

  • Nayanthara returns as Mookuthi Amman

  • Regena Cassandrra

  • Urvashi

  • Duniya Vijay

  • Yogi Babu

  • Khushbu Sundar

  • Plus Sneha, Abhinaya, Nithin Sathya, Y. G. Mahendran and more

What's the story?

The makers have kept the plot quiet, but here's the setup: the goddess returns to protect a young prince and takes on a powerful new evil. Sundar C has even compared the film's idea to Terminator, which, honestly, is the most unexpected comparison of the year.

The budget

This one is big. The film is reported to have cost around ₹100 crore. Production companies include Vels Film International, Avni Cinemax, Rowdy Pictures and IVY Entertainment, with Hiphop Tamizha on music.

Box office: a slow start

Let's be honest about the numbers. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Mookuthi Amman 2 opened to about ₹1.88 crore net in India on day one, with Tamil bringing in ₹1.75 crore and Telugu about ₹13 lakh.

That's a soft start for a ₹100 crore film. Why? It walked straight into a brutal weekend, up against Suriya's Scene in Tamil Nadu and Ramayana everywhere else. Timing matters, and this was tough timing.

Can it recover? Family films with a goddess at the centre often grow through word of mouth over a festive week. The next few days will tell.

OTT release: where to watch later

The film is reported to be heading to JioHotstar after its theatrical run. No streaming date has been announced yet. Indian films usually reach OTT four to eight weeks after release, but there's nothing official.

My take

The first film worked because it was small, smart and surprisingly sincere. The sequel is bigger in every way, and the real question is whether Sundar C's style keeps that heart. Nayanthara as a goddess is still a casting masterstroke. Whether that's enough against Ramayana is the gamble.
