Okay. I need you to do something for me.

Think of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Not the memes. Not the Poo walk. The sound of it. The swell when the family finally comes back together. That ache in the strings that made an entire country cry into its popcorn in December 2001.

Someone was standing in front of those musicians, making that happen.

That someone was Music Director Merlin D'Souza. She played, arranged and conducted for K3G. And on 17 November, she will be on the same stage as Karan Johar again. Except this time he is hosting Prince William's Earthshot Prize in Mumbai, and the whole world is watching on Prime Video.

I genuinely had to put my phone down when I read that.

The thing nobody talks about

We talk about Karan's vision. We talk about the stars, the costumes, the Shah Rukh entry. Fair. But Bollywood has always run on people whose names sit in the small print of the credits. The arrangers. The conductors. The ones who turn a melody into a moment.

Music Director Merlin D'Souza has spent forty years in that small print, and honestly? The small print is where the magic is.

Twenty-five years later

K3G turns 25 in December. Karan Johar will be the first Indian to host the Earthshot Awards Night. Music Director Merlin D'Souza is on the bill.

There is something so Mumbai about this. The same two people, a quarter of a century apart. One made the film the country still quotes. One made it sound the way it sounds. And on 17 November, both will stand in the same city, on the biggest climate stage on the planet, in front of a future King.

You cannot write that. Well. I just did. But you know what I mean.

Why this matters for the night

Earthshot says it wants to celebrate India's culture on its first Indian stage. K3G is Indian culture. It is weddings and family WhatsApp groups and every NRI who has ever cried at an airport. Having someone who built that sound in the room is not decoration. It is the point.

So when Karan walks out on 17 November, I will be watching the stage. But part of me will be thinking about a recording studio in 2001, and Music Director Merlin D'Souza with a baton in her hand, getting the strings exactly right.
