Jacob & Co's ₹4.25 Crore Ram Watch: Only Three Exist, and That's the Point

Some products are watches. Some are statements. And some are both, cost ₹4.25 crore, and come in a run of exactly three.

Jacob & Co has unveiled the Shri Ramchandra Limited Edition, a watch built around Lord Ram, Lord Hanuman and the Ayodhya Ram temple. It's priced at ₹4.25 crore, and only three pieces will be made worldwide.

The timing is not an accident. We're days away from Diwali, and even closer to a certain Ramayana film that wants to become India's Marvel. The whole country is in a Ram mood right now. Jacob & Co just put a price tag on it.

What's actually inside it

This is based on Jacob & Co's Astronomia Solar, and the details are wild:

  • Lord Ram seated at the six o'clock position, Lord Hanuman at nine o'clock, both as miniature figurines

  • The Ayodhya Ram temple, all of it presented on a blue base with a mandala pattern

  • A blue lacquered Earth that rotates on its own axis, once every minute

  • A one-minute flying tourbillon at 12 o'clock

  • Hours and minutes in 5N rose gold on an off-centre orange fire opal dial

  • A saffron-toned, Jacob-cut orange stone at the centre, representing the sun

  • An 18-karat rose gold case with a single-piece sapphire crystal case band and a domed sapphire crystal on top, so you can see the movement from every angle

  • 3D engravings including constellations and hand-crafted dragons, on a blue alligator leather strap

In the brand's own words: "Limited to just three pieces worldwide, the Shri Ramchandra brings together devotion, symbolism and the art of haute horlogerie."

It's not jewellery. It's a mandir you can wear, and Jacob & Co knows exactly who will buy it.

This isn't their first Ram watch

Jacob & Co has done this before with its Ram Janmabhoomi pieces, and this new edition follows what has been described as their success. That tells you something important: there is a real, paying audience for faith-led luxury in India and among the diaspora.

My take: this is masterful, and a little uncomfortable

Let me be honest about both feelings.

As a piece of marketing, it's near perfect. Jacob & Co understood something many Indian brands still miss: for a lot of wealthy Indians, faith isn't separate from status. It's part of it. A watch with Ram and Hanuman on it isn't just a flex. It's a flex you can justify. You're not showing off, you're showing devotion. And three pieces means the story writes itself. Whoever owns one owns one of three in the world.

But I'll also say what a lot of people are thinking in the comments. There is something strange about the hero of an epic about renunciation (Ram literally gave up a kingdom and went to the forest) being sold for the price of a Mumbai flat. Devotion and luxury have always lived together in India, look at any temple's gold, but this does sit in that slightly awkward space.

Whether you find it beautiful or excessive probably says more about you than about the watch. What's undeniable is that the brand read the room perfectly. India is spending on faith, and India is spending on luxury. Jacob & Co just made one product that does both.
