The Surat Literature Festival will return from 8 to 10 January 2027, the Surat Literary Foundation has announced.

The announcement is brief. The speakers list, programme schedule and venue are still to come, and registrations are expected to open soon.

What the last edition looked like

The festival's previous edition, its fourth, ran from 9 to 11 January 2026 at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University. It was framed around Viksit Bharat 2047 and India's civilisational questions, with sessions spanning national security, media, cinema and Indian knowledge systems. Actor Pratik Gandhi performed the play Hu Chandrakant Bakshi, and a folk and classical showcase brought together forms from Kathak to Tamasha.

Why it matters

India's literary conversation has long been staged in a handful of metropolitan cities. The more interesting developments are increasingly happening elsewhere.

Festivals in cities such as Surat do something the metros cannot: they place national ideas inside regional contexts, and they let local audiences set the terms of the conversation rather than merely receive it.

Ideas travel. They also take root differently depending on where they land.

We will report the line-up once it is announced. Meanwhile, for culture events further afield, see our guide to IFFI 2026 in Goa.
