Stranger Things Is Getting a Prequel, Other Worlds. Confession: We've Never Watched Stranger Things
I have a confession, and I'm making it on behalf of the whole AltBollywood team.
None of us has watched Stranger Things.
Not one episode. Not the first season, not the last. We know there's a girl with a shaved head and a nosebleed, some kids on bicycles, and something called the Upside Down. That's it. That's our entire knowledge.

So when Netflix announced a brand-new Stranger Things prequel this week, my first reaction was honestly: "Another one? Why does everyone love this thing so much?"
Let's figure it out together.
The news: Other Worlds
Netflix has announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action prequel series set in the 1950s. It's slated for 2028.
Here's what we know:
Created by: longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry, who is also the showrunner
Executive producers: the Duffer Brothers, who created the original show, along with Shawn Levy
Director: Joe Wright directs the first three episodes. Yes, the Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director.
Cast: none announced yet
Setting: the 1950s, before the events of the original show
The Duffers describe it as "Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains."
So why is Stranger Things such a big deal?
Okay, homework time. Here's what I learned.
It's genuinely massive. Netflix says the show has more than 1.2 billion views across its first four seasons, and that seasons 4 and 5 are among its most popular TV seasons ever. That's not a hit. That's a cultural event.
It's nostalgia, served perfectly. The show is set in the 1980s, in a small American town. Walkie-talkies, arcades, synth music, kids on bikes. For people who grew up in that era, it's a time machine. For younger viewers, it's a cool vintage world they never got to live in.
It made old songs new again. In 2022, Kate Bush's 1985 song "Running Up That Hill" went viral after it featured in season 4, and climbed back up the charts nearly four decades after its release. When a show can do that to a song, it has real cultural power.
The kids grew up on screen. The main cast were children when it started in 2016 and adults by the end. Viewers literally watched them grow up. That builds a bond few shows ever get.
It mixes genres. From what I can tell, it's horror, sci-fi, coming-of-age and friendship drama all at once. Something for everyone in the house.
Why Netflix is doing this
The main show has ended with season 5. But Stranger Things is Netflix's defining franchise, and it's already spread far beyond the original series:
Stranger Things: Tales From '85, an animated series
Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a stage play in London and on Broadway, also written by Kate Trefry
Immersive fan experiences at Netflix House venues in the US
Other Worlds is the biggest test yet. Can Stranger Things survive without Hawkins, without the original kids and without the 1980s? If it can, Netflix has its own long-running universe. If it can't, it's a very expensive lesson. A big bet either way.
Will I watch it?
Honestly? This might be my way in. A prequel with no cast yet and a whole new era means a newcomer like me isn't behind. I won't need to know the backstory, because this is the backstory.
But I've also just realised that I'm writing about a show I've never seen, so maybe the real move is to start season 1 tonight. Two years should be enough time to catch up.
Tell me in the comments: is Stranger Things worth starting in 2026, or have I missed the moment?
