Why Primetime Is One of the Most Gen Z Movies of 2026, Even Though It's Set in 2006

Here's a strange thing. The most Gen Z film I've watched this year is about a TV show from 2006. Before most Gen Z viewers could even read.

Primetime, A24's psychological thriller starring Robert Pattinson as journalist Chris Hansen, looks back at the making of the 2000s hidden-camera show To Catch a Predator. On paper, that sounds like a millennial nostalgia project. In practice, it's a film about everything Gen Z lives with every day: virality, public shaming, justice as entertainment and the blurry line between doing good and going viral.

The basics

  • Director: Lance Oppenheim, in his narrative feature debut

  • Writer: Ajon Singh

  • Cast: Robert Pattinson, Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Phoebe Bridgers, Matt Maher

  • Released: 25 September 2026 in the US and India, distributed in India by PVR INOX Pictures with Lionsgate Play India

  • Rating: R in the US, for disturbing sexual material, graphic nudity, language and some violence. This is a heavy watch, not a casual one.

  • Critics: 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus praising how it interrogates the line between justice and lurid spectacle

1. It's about content before content had a name

To Catch a Predator was, in many ways, the blueprint for a lot of what's on our feeds now. A host, hidden cameras, a public confrontation and an audience at home watching it all unfold.

Swap the network TV crew for a phone camera and you've basically described a whole genre of social media "exposé" content today. Primetime makes you sit with how that format was born, and how quickly a moral mission can turn into a ratings machine.

2. It asks the question Gen Z argues about online every day

Is it justice, or is it a show?

Critics have pointed out that the film never lets you get comfortable on either side. It makes you laugh, then makes you feel bad for laughing. For a generation that grew up with call-outs, cancellations and pile-ons happening in real time, that discomfort is painfully familiar.

3. It's already living on TikTok

Some reviewers have noted that the film's most quotable, uncomfortable moments are already circulating as clips and memes. That's the Gen Z life cycle of a film now: watch it, clip it, remix it, argue about it.

There's something almost meta about a film critiquing media spectacle becoming spectacle itself.

4. Robert Pattinson, Gen Z's favourite weirdo

Pattinson has spent the last decade making the internet forget Twilight, picking strange, bold roles over safe ones. His Chris Hansen has been widely praised as an uncanny, unsettling performance, from the voice to the direct-to-camera stare.

Gen Z loves an actor who refuses to be predictable, and Pattinson is the poster boy. And he's having a massive season, with The Batman Part II back in production and Dune: Part Three on the way.

5. A24 and a cast that feels like a group chat

A24 is practically a Gen Z brand at this point. And casting Phoebe Bridgers, an indie music icon for a generation, alongside Skyler Gisondo tells you exactly who this film is talking to. Reviewers have singled out Gisondo's decoy character as one of the most compelling parts of the film.

A word of caution

This isn't a fun Friday-night pick. The subject matter is disturbing, and the film doesn't look away from the moral mess. Check the content warnings before you go, and don't go in expecting a satire with easy laughs.

My take

Primetime is a time capsule that turns into a mirror. It's set before smartphones took over, but it's really about the world smartphones built: one where everyone is a potential camera crew and every moral crisis is a potential trend.

That's why it feels so 2026. And that's why Gen Z, the generation raised inside that world, might understand it better than anyone.
