The final trailer for Dune: Part Three dropped on 27 October, and I've now watched it more times than I'd like to admit.

Here's the thing. If you only watched the first two films, this one might feel tonally different. And that's deliberate. Denis Villeneuve has called it "a thriller", and said it's more action-packed, tense and muscular than the two before it.

So let's break down what we actually understood. Book spoilers are kept light, I promise.

The basics

  • Release: 18 December 2026, in cinemas and IMAX

  • Based on: Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah (1969)

  • Director: Denis Villeneuve

  • Music: Hans Zimmer returns

  • Shot on: mostly 65mm film, with some sequences on IMAX film

1. Paul is Emperor now, and it isn't a happy ending

Part Two ended with Paul taking the throne and declaring war. Part Three picks up years later. Paul rules as Emperor, married to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) for politics, while Chani (Zendaya) remains the woman he loves.

The trailers show him and Stilgar (Javier Bardem) expanding the empire to distant planets. In other words, the holy war Paul feared has happened. And it was in his name.

What it means: this is the story of a hero who got everything he wanted, and has to live with what it cost.

2. Chani is still fighting

One of the most striking shots across the trailers is Chani fighting on top of a sandworm. She isn't a background figure in Paul's story. If anything, she's the conscience of the film, the person who saw where Paul was heading before anyone else did.

There's also a quiet, tender scene where Paul and Chani talk about names for a possible child: Ghanima for a girl, Leto for a boy. Book readers just felt a chill.

3. Alia is here, and she's grown up

Anya Taylor-Joy is Alia, Paul's sister, who we last saw as an unborn child with terrifying powers. In the trailers, she prays with Paul and speaks to crowds of followers and pilgrims.

What it means: Alia is a powerful religious figure in her own right now. That makes her both Paul's greatest ally and a potential wild card.

4. Robert Pattinson is the plot twist

Robert Pattinson plays Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer, a shapeshifter. The Tleilaxu are a secretive sect that manipulates genetics, and they're among the forces plotting against Paul.

What it means: in a film about betrayal, casting the most unpredictable actor of his generation as a man who can become anyone is just chef's kiss. And yes, this is a big week for Pattinson, with The Batman Part II back in production too.

5. Jason Momoa is back, sort of

Jason Momoa returns as a new version of Duncan Idaho, the loyal swordmaster who died in the first film. How he's back is a big part of the story, so I'll stop there.

The tone: a thriller about power

Put all the clues together and Part Three looks less like a war epic and more like a political thriller. Conspiracies at court. Shapeshifters. A ruler trapped by his own prophecy. Villeneuve has said Paul has to find a way out of a cycle of violence, and has called it one of his most personal films.

That's what makes Dune Messiah such an interesting book to adapt. It deliberately undercuts the hero's journey. It asks what happens when the chosen one wins.

Why Indian audiences should be excited

Dune has quietly built a huge fanbase in India, especially for IMAX, and this is the kind of film that deserves the biggest screen you can find. December is already crowded, so book early.

Also, the cinematographer on this one, Linus Sandgren, has just been reported for Marvel's Ghost Rider. The man's having a year.

My take

The first two films were about rising. This one is about falling, slowly and beautifully, with sand everywhere. I'm ready to be emotionally destroyed on 18 December.
