There is a word in Hindi, sahajta, that English renders poorly as "ease." It means something closer to naturalness that has not been rehearsed into being. It is the rarest quality in a debut, because debuts are, by definition, rehearsed.

Pragati Srivastava has it in Nakhrewaalii.

The film

Nakhrewaalii, produced by Aanand L Rai's Colour Yellow with Jio Studios and directed by Rahul Shanklya, released in cinemas on 30 October. It is, the makers say, loosely based on Satya Vyas's bestselling novel Dilli Darbar, adapted by Divy Nidhi Sharma. The makers have called it a "womantic comedy," a rom-com that reverses the usual courtship roles.

Srivastava plays Paridhi, a young woman with a government job whose parents are fixated on finding her the perfect husband. It is a familiar premise, and familiarity is precisely the trap: the easier the material looks, the harder it is to play without either pushing or vanishing.

What she gets right

Srivastava does neither. Paridhi unfolds rather than announces herself. The performance lets scenes breathe instead of filling every silence, which is a confidence most newcomers acquire only by their third film.

Her pairing with Ansh Duggal works on a particular frequency, the one Hindi rom-coms do best when they do it well: attraction disguised as irritation, flirtation conducted through argument. It is restless and comfortable at once, which is harder to sustain than it sounds.

The Aanand L Rai factor

To be launched by Aanand L Rai's banner carries its own weight. His films, from Tanu Weds Manu onward, have made small-town women with opinions into the centre of mainstream cinema. Paridhi belongs to that lineage.

A provisional verdict

One film is a data point, not a career. But the instinct on display, to trust the character rather than perform her, is the one that tends to scale. If Nakhrewaalii is the beginning, the more interesting question is what Srivastava does when she is handed something heavier.

We will be watching. For more new pairings worth tracking, see our list of fresh on-screen pairs.
