Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi has been sentenced to 74 lashes by a criminal court in Qom after performing without a hijab during a December 2024 YouTube livestream. The severe punishment highlights the aggressive legal crackdown on female artists who challenge Iran's strict social codes through digital platforms.

The 29-year-old artist and eight members of her production team received the 74-lash sentence, alongside a two-year travel ban and a two-year prohibition on all artistic activities. Ahmadi was formally charged with offending public decency and distributing immoral content online. These charges stem directly from her viral performance of a patriotic song, which she sang while wearing a long black dress with uncovered arms and no mandatory head covering.

The Caravanserai Concert

The incident centers on a December 4, 2024, broadcast that Ahmadi described as an imaginary concert. Set in an empty historic caravanserai in Qom province, Ahmadi performed the patriotic anthem "Az Khoone Javanane Vatan" or "From the Blood of the Youth of the Homeland". The video quickly amassed roughly three million views on YouTube. Authorities briefly detained Ahmadi and her musicians shortly after the performance, releasing them before officially arresting her on December 14 in Mazandaran province.

The original concert footage is currently streaming on YouTube in India, and is available internationally across various global social media platforms.

The Human Rights Backlash

The ruling has drawn intense criticism from international human rights advocates. Bahar Ghandehari of the US-based Center for Human Rights in Iran stated that punishing Ahmadi with 74 lashes for simply singing and appearing without a hijab is a stark reminder that the human rights situation in Iran remains unchanged.

Legal experts also note the contradictions in the sentencing. Human rights attorney Moein Khazaeli pointed out that under Iranian criminal law, singing and the creation of musical works by women are not explicitly criminalized. Therefore, categorizing a musical performance as the production of obscene content lacks a clear legal foundation. The international community continues to view the flogging of artists not as a legitimate judicial penalty, but as a severe violation of basic human dignity.
