The intersection of philosophy and performing arts is set to take center stage in Mumbai this October. A compelling new theatrical production titled "Luminous Play of the Self" is scheduled to premiere at one of the city's most prestigious cultural venues.

Designed and directed by Dr. Omkar Bhatkar, the production is a collaborative effort presented by the Backwaters Collective and Metamorphosis Theatre and Films.

Exploring 'Atmavilasam'

The play serves as a direct theatrical interpretation of 'Atmavilasam', a profound prose poem authored by the revered Indian philosopher and social reformer Narayana Guru.

Narayana Guru's philosophical works are renowned for exploring the deep interconnectedness of existence, non-dualism (Advaita), and the nature of the self. By bringing 'Atmavilasam' to the stage, Bhatkar—a sociologist, visiting professor, and the founder of Metamorphosis Theatre Inc.—aims to translate these complex existential themes into a visual and performative medium.

The official poster sets a striking tone for the production, featuring a male actor illuminated against a dark backdrop, adorned with a branch-like headdress, suggesting a deep, elemental connection to nature and the self.

Event Details: When and Where

The play will be staged in the heart of Mumbai's historic Fort district.

  • Date: Friday, October 16th, 2026. (Note: The event takes place this week).

  • Time: 7:30 PM.

  • Venue: The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Fort, Mumbai.

Registration and Entry

In an effort to make this cultural and philosophical exploration accessible to the public, the organizers have announced that entry is free. However, attendees are required to register in advance via the official website, www.metamorphosisarte.com, to secure their seating.

For theatre enthusiasts seeking a production that bridges art, academics, and deep existential inquiry, "Luminous Play of the Self" promises to be a standout event in Mumbai's October cultural calendar.
