Mumbai has a very, very large heart.

That's how Ekjute Theatre Group opens its pitch for Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan, and anyone who has ever moved to this city with a suitcase and a dream will feel it in their chest.

The details

  • What: Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan, a play by Ekjute Theatre Group

  • When: Saturday, 31 October, 7:30pm

  • Where: Rangshila Theatre, Mumbai

  • Tickets: BookMyShow, or call 9323738846

The story

Every day, thousands of people arrive in Mumbai chasing one dream: making it in films. The city tests them, challenges them, changes them and, eventually, absorbs them.

The play follows a group of aspiring actors, writers and musicians living under one roof, sharing rent, friendships, heartbreaks, laughs and dreams. Through changing fortunes, fragile relationships and compromises, it's ultimately about hope, and about the strange, stubborn love people feel for a city that doesn't always love them back.

As the synopsis puts it, love the city or hate it, somewhere you will find yourself in its people.

The cast and crew

  • Cast: Sangam Shukla, Manav Pande, Rajiv Singh, Devesh Kumar, Aamir Khan, Maneeta Malik, Bhoomika Meena, Gunjan Tyagi, Tejas Yadav and Hanif Patni

  • Music: Amod Bhatt

  • Costume: Mala Dey

  • Lights: Akbar Khan

  • Production: Hanif Patni

Why you should go

It's the same journey so many stars talk about, from small towns to Mumbai's grind. Pankaj Tripathi's story, which we touched on ahead of his Jagran Film Festival session, is the dream version. This play is about everyone else.

Mumbai stories are everywhere on screen, but there's something different about seeing them live, in a small theatre, with actors who are probably living some version of this story themselves.

If you've ever shared a one-BHK with three strangers in Andheri, eaten vada pav for dinner three nights in a row or rushed to an audition in the rain, this one's for you.

And if you haven't, go anyway. You'll understand this city a little better by the end.
