Denzil Smith at 66: The Actor Who Started Late and Never Stopped Working
In 1988, Denzil Smith was working in advertising at Lintas, under Alyque Padamsee. He was in his late thirties. Most people at that age are consolidating a career. He left his to act.
Today, on his 76th birthday, it is worth noticing how completely that gamble paid off, and how quietly.

The Bandra beginning
Smith was born in Mumbai on 6 November 1950 to an Anglo-Indian family. His father was a civil servant and a musician. He studied at St Andrew's in Bandra and read English literature at the University of Mumbai. When he left advertising, he trained his voice at the NCPA, and that voice has been one of his defining instruments ever since.
The stage came first
Before film found him, theatre did. With Motley, Naseeruddin Shah's company, he played Lucky in Waiting for Godot and worked in Endgame and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. With Lillete Dubey's PrimeTime Theatre Company, he appeared in On a Muggy Night in Mumbai, August: Osage County and Gauhar. He played Nehru in Letters to a Daughter from Prison and Judge Brack in Hedda Gabler, and toured with The Merchants of Bollywood for roughly 600 shows.
In 2006 he founded Stagesmith Productions to make English-language Indian theatre. An actor who starts late, it seems, does not wait to be cast.
The faces of a career
What makes Smith unusual is range across borders. A partial list:
Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Gurinder Chadha's Viceroy's House (2017), perhaps his most significant role
Mr Shroff in The Lunchbox (2013)
The Viceroy Club secretary in both Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films
Larsen in Bombay Velvet (2015) and Detective Sondhi in Badla (2019)
Sanjay Singh in Christopher Nolan's Tenet (2020)
R. N. Kao in Bell Bottom (2021)
The Maharaj in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024)
On streaming, he has been everywhere: Delhi Crime, Made in Heaven, Mind the Malhotras, The Serpent, Beecham House and The Railway Men.
The character actor's craft
There is a particular skill in being the person audiences trust instantly. Smith plays authority figures often, ministers, judges, senior officers, and he plays them without the pomp that would make them caricatures. He arrives, the scene settles, and you believe the room. That is not stardom, and it is not meant to be. It is something rarer: reliability over four decades.
The lesson in the late start
Indian cinema loves the story of the young outsider who makes it. Smith's story is a different and more useful one. He began acting when many careers are fixed, built a body of stage work first, and let the screen come to him. Nearly forty years on, he is still working across Hindi, English and international productions.
Happy birthday, Mr Smith.
