Full spoilers for Ramayana: Part 1. If you haven't seen it, read our spoiler-light review instead and come back after.

Okay. Most epics end with a war. Nitesh Tiwari ends Part 1 with a funeral and a promise. And honestly? That's the braver choice.

Where the story stops

Part 1 covers Rama's journey from his early life to Sita's abduction. So by the final act we've had the swayamvara in Mithila, Kaikeyi's demand that sent Rama into exile, and the golden deer deception that draws Rama away. Sita is alone, and Ravana comes for her.

Jatayu's last stand

As Ravana carries Sita away, the great bird Jatayu, voiced by Anupam Kher, flies at him.

It's not a fair fight, and the film doesn't pretend it is. Jatayu is old. Ravana is at the peak of his power. But Jatayu fights anyway, because he's watching a wrong happen and he refuses to look away. Ravana cuts him down and carries Sita away.

This is the moment the film has been building to: the one who stands up to Ravana here isn't a prince or a god. It's an ageing bird who knows he'll lose.

The cremation

As in the epic, Jatayu's sacrifice is what points Rama towards Ravana.

Rama cremates Jatayu himself, performing the last rites the way a son would for a father. In the tradition, it's one of the most moving moments in the epic: Rama treating a creature others might call "just a bird" as family. On screen, after everything Rama has already lost, his home, his throne and now Sita, it lands like a hammer.

Rama's vow

At the pyre, Rama takes his pratigya: he will bring Sita back, and he will kill Ravana.

This is the real ending. The whole film has kept Rama steady and controlled, even in the Kaikeyi scene. Here, the calm turns into purpose. The prince becomes a warrior. Everything in Part 2 flows from this promise.

The post-credits scene: Hanuman is coming

Do not leave when the credits roll.

There's a short post-credits scene that gives us a glimpse of Hanuman, played by Sunny Deol. It's just a glimpse, but it's enough. In the epic, Hanuman is the one who finds Sita in Lanka and becomes Rama's greatest devotee and ally. So this tease is the film telling you exactly where Part 2 begins.

And casting Sunny Deol, an actor whose screen persona is built on raw strength and loyalty, as Hanuman? You can already hear the cinema halls next Diwali.

What it all means for Part 2

  • The search for Sita, which brings Hanuman to Lanka

  • The alliance that Rama builds on his way south

  • The war with Ravana, the vow Rama made at Jatayu's pyre

Ramayana: Part 2 is scheduled for Diwali 2028.

My take

Ending on Jatayu is genius. It reminds you that this story was never about who's strongest. It's about who does the right thing when it costs everything. Part 1 ends with Rama having lost almost all of it. Part 2 is where he takes it back.
