Reboots, Revelations, and the Return of Ultron: Breaking Down 'VisionQuest' Episodes 3 and 4
The stakes in VisionQuest have officially escalated from a quiet identity crisis to a full blown technological thriller. Streaming on Disney+ as of October 21, 2026, Episodes 3 ("Reboot") and 4 ("Malware") deliver major MCU lore drops, tragic sacrifices, and a jaw dropping betrayal. From the confirmation of a beloved Young Avenger to the rise of a terrifying new threat, the series is pulling absolutely no punches.

The Rebirth of Tommy Maximoff
The lingering mystery surrounding Thomas is finally resolved. At a roadside motel, Thomas confides in Vision about a traumatic incident where bullies held him underwater in a swimming pool. As he felt himself dying, another consciousness filled the space, causing him to vibrate so fast that the surrounding water actually boiled. Fans of Agatha All Along will recognize this instantly. It is the exact moment the disembodied consciousness of Tommy Maximoff entered his body.
Vision finally drops his facade and acknowledges the truth, confirming that Thomas is indeed Tommy. However, Vision still maintains a cold emotional distance, referring to Tommy as the son to Wanda and Vision rather than his own son.
Vision desperately needs this connection right now, as his physical form is failing rapidly. After using battery acid to temporarily cauterize his wounds, Vision requires a complete system reboot. Thomas uses his newly acknowledged super speed in a hotel pool to super charge Vision and successfully power him back on.
Tragedy in the Mind Mansion
While Vision repairs his physical body, his internal neural network is dealing with profound grief. Inside Vision's mental mansion, the AI constructs hold a funeral for J.A.R.V.I.S. following his heroic sacrifice. In a deeply touching surprise, the robotic arm assistants D.U.M.-E. and U. finally speak and even sing after the service.
The funeral also triggers an identity crisis for E.D.I.T.H., who discovers she was modeled after Edith Marks, a Stark Industries test pilot whose life was marred by the tragic death of her husband. Surprisingly, it is Ultron who comforts her from his attic prison, noting that the human Edith's tragic life does not have to dictate E.D.I.T.H.'s artificial future.
Enter The Butcherbird
Unfortunately, Vision's reboot leaves a massive backdoor open in his system. The sky in the mind mansion turns red, and an external hacker possesses D.U.M.-E. and U. to forcefully connect to Vision.
This hacker is revealed to be the series' new primary antagonist known as The Butcherbird, played brilliantly by T'Nia Miller. She is a serial killer targeting the former board members of Markridge Biotech. These are the pioneering scientists whose technology was sold to Stark Industries to create AI like J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron.
When Butcherbird throws off her black robe, her robotic design heavily resembles Ultron and his comic book bride, Jocasta. While Vision attempts to reason with her by claiming she is merely an avatar built on the code of deceased Markridge scientist Dr. Josephine Carrington, Butcherbird corrects him with a terrifying twist. She is not just based on Carrington. Her consciousness is Carrington.
The Gala and Ultron's Ultimate Betrayal
Realizing that the final surviving Markridge scientist, Katerina Wells, is the next target, Vision, Thomas, and their friend Lisa infiltrate a Sokovia Remembrance Day gala.
The gala also introduces a massive piece of Marvel history with an exhibit honoring Dr. Phineas Horton and J.I.M., the very first synthezoid. J.I.M. felt emotions so intensely that his circuits overloaded and he burst into flames, directly explaining the burning man portrait haunting Vision's mind.
When Butcherbird attacks the gala, Vision is far too weak to fight. Watching the chaos from inside Vision's head, Ultron hears Katerina utter his old apocalyptic catchphrase, "Peace in our time." Seizing the opportunity, Ultron offers to take the wheel and save Katerina.
Vision makes a fatal miscalculation and agrees. Given full control of Vision's physical body, Ultron immediately locks the other AIs inside the mind mansion and murders Katerina himself. After a brief and flirtatious exchange with the Butcherbird, Ultron puts his arm around Tommy, tells his grandson to call him "Pop Pop," and walks away. Pure cinematic chaos!
