Vikrant Massey Honors the Legacy of Nirmal Purja: "A True Son of the Soil" in Emotional Kathmandu Tribute

Indian actor Vikrant Massey recently shared a deeply moving moment of solidarity with the people of Nepal during a public appearance in Kathmandu. Taking the stage, Massey paused the scheduled proceedings to deliver an emotional tribute to the legendary Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, widely known as Nimsdai, following his tragic and sudden passing.  

A Nation in Mourning

The global mountaineering community and the nation of Nepal were left reeling after news broke that Purja had lost his life while trekking in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The devastating avalanche on Broad Peak also claimed the lives of his climbing partners and guides, as well as several other members of his expedition. Acknowledging the heavy hearts in the room, Massey made it a priority to honor their memories and recognize the profound grief sweeping Purja’s homeland.  

Addressing the audience, Massey spoke candidly about his personal admiration for the record-breaking alpinist.

“I'm sure most of us are aware that just today we got to know that the legendary mountaineer Nirmal Purja, fondly known as Nimsdai, unfortunately passed away while he was trekking in Pakistan,” Massey stated.

Remembering the Fallen

Ensuring the tragedy of the other fallen climbers was not overshadowed, he added, “Not just him, but the other five Nepalese mountaineers who've lost their lives, I sincerely want to pay my condolences to the people of Nepal, to all the people who looked up to him.”

Despite hoping to maintain the event's positive atmosphere, Massey explained that as a genuine admirer standing in Purja's own country, remaining silent was not an option. “I really don't want to make it very somber, but because I was a huge fan of him, like most of us are, and we are here in Kathmandu, his hometown, I don't think we can proceed without paying condolences," he expressed, ultimately praising the climber as “the true son of the soil who took Nepal to the world”.

A Legacy Transcending Borders

The actor’s poignant words struck a deep chord with those in attendance. By pausing to honor Nimsdai and his fellow mountaineers, Massey underscored the transcending nature of Purja’s legacy, which included climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks in record time. His heartfelt gesture not only celebrated a local hero who commanded immense global respect, but also offered a comforting message of support to a grieving nation mourning the loss of its brightest stars.
