The forgotten history of India's first female anti-colonial warrior is unfolding live at Prithvi Theatre this week. "Veera Rani Abbakka" spotlights the sixteenth-century Tuluva queen who successfully defended her coastal kingdom against Portuguese naval forces. Billed as "The Queen of the seas" and "the Flame of Ullala," Abbakka Chowta was a master tactician who defied imperial conquest long before the more widely recognized rebellions of the nineteenth century.

This production carries significant weight in the Mumbai arts circuit as it marks the 50th anniversary of Ank, the esteemed theatre group founded by the late Dinesh Thakur. Spearheading this golden jubilee event is Priita Mathur Thakur, who takes on the triple role of writer, designer, and director. The play aims to resurrect the legacy of a fierce ruler who commanded a formidable naval force and protected her territory with unrelenting grit, bringing the atmosphere of historical naval combat right to the stage.

The technical crew bringing this epic to life includes Atul Tiwari handling set design and Richa Sharad providing the dialogues. The period-specific aesthetic is crafted by costume designer Mala Dey, while Tanusree Gupta choreographs the movement. The immersive atmosphere is further enhanced by soundscape designer Aman Gupta and lighting designer Shivaji Shinde.

Supported by Bajaj Beyond, the production opens tonight, October 8, at 8:00 PM at Prithvi Theatre in Juhu. Two additional performances will follow tomorrow, October 9, at 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Audiences looking to attend can book tickets online or reach out via the contact numbers 9920116930 and 9820285123 provided by the organizers.
