Unabomber On Netflix: Jacob Tremblay And Russell Crowe Revisit Ted Kaczynski's Harvard Years

True crime is one of Netflix's most reliable genres, and its latest entry, Unabomber, streaming worldwide from today, goes after one of America's most studied cases from a less familiar angle. Instead of opening with the bombs or the manifesto, it spends much of its time at Harvard, where a teenage maths prodigy named Ted Kaczynski became a subject in a psychological study.

Jacob Tremblay, the child star of Room, now all grown up, plays Kaczynski. Russell Crowe plays the professor who ran that study.

The Story Netflix Is Telling

The film moves between two timelines. In one, the young Kaczynski arrives at Harvard and is drawn into experiments run by psychologist Henry Murray. In the other, set decades later, FBI agent Joanne Miller, played by Shailene Woodley, works the manhunt for a bomber who targeted people across the United States for nearly two decades. Annabelle Wallis plays Christiana Morgan, Murray's collaborator.

Director Janus Metz (Borg vs McEnroe) has said he was drawn to the Harvard chapter because it is the least known part of the story, and described the film as being about a young man who feels increasingly shut out by society and turns to violence as revenge.

Tremblay's Take On The Role

Tremblay has said he wanted Kaczynski to feel real rather than like a caricature, and drew on his own experiences of not fitting in to build the performance. For an actor best known for playing sympathetic kids, it is a sharp turn, and it is likely to be the main talking point of the release.

The supporting cast includes Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg and Marc Menchaca. The script is by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, the score is by Marco Beltrami, and the editor is Zach Staenberg, who cut The Matrix. The film was produced by 2.0 Entertainment and MRC Film and shot in Montreal in mid-2025. It was developed under the title Unabom before being renamed Unabomber in March 2026.

A Note On Tone

This is a drama about real victims and a real killer. Netflix is positioning it as a character study rather than a thriller, and viewers who have already seen Manhunt: Unabomber (2017) will find this one covers different ground, with far more focus on Kaczynski's formative years.
