The Diplomat Season 4 Ending Explained: Why Dennison Dies in Amritsar, and What Kate's Exit Sets Up
Spoilers for all eight episodes of The Diplomat season 4 follow. If you're looking for the 2025 John Abraham film of the same name, this isn't it.

Netflix dropped all eight episodes of The Diplomat's fourth season on 15 October. By the end, the show has killed one of its most liked characters, replaced a Prime Minister, and left Kate Wyler walking out on the President of the United States with her husband beside her.
For Indian viewers, one detail lands harder than the rest. Austin Dennison dies here. In Amritsar.
How Dennison dies
Dennison, the British foreign secretary played by David Gyasi, is killed in episode 4 when his helicopter goes down in Amritsar. He is there to meet India's foreign minister. It is sudden, it happens away from the main power struggle, and it removes one of the few people who treated Kate as an equal rather than a tool.
That is the point. Season 4 is about people losing the steady hands around them. Dennison was the show's conscience in Whitehall. Once he is gone, nobody in London is positioned to slow anything down.
Placing his death in India also widens the map. The Diplomat has mostly lived in London and Washington, with this season shot across London, Washington, New York and Lucca in Italy. Sending a British foreign secretary to Punjab to talk to New Delhi is a reminder that in this show's world, India is one of the rooms where Western crises now get managed.
The Prime Minister swap
Nicol Trowbridge, Rory Kinnear's slippery PM, steps down mid-season. His replacement is Bethan Vaughn, played by Jodie Whittaker. She is a fresh variable in a season otherwise defined by people digging in.
Grace Penn's spiral
Allison Janney's President Grace Penn survives an assassination attempt in episode 1. What follows is a leader getting louder and more willing to gamble with lives. Netflix's own recap describes her as lonely and scared but unwilling to show it.
The season's spine is a secret plan between Grace and Vice President Hal Wyler involving a stolen Russian nuclear weapon, the kind of scheme that drags the US and UK toward open confrontation. By the G7 summit in the finale, Grace is threatening to fire on any country that interferes with the American mission, Russian warships included.
The ending
Stuart Hayford objects to the warship plan and is recalled to Washington for it. That's the last straw for Kate. At the G7, she hands her resignation as ambassador to the UK directly to Grace.
Hal tries to push back inside the room and is told to sit down. Then he does something the show has been building to for four seasons: he steps out and joins Kate, Billie and Ganon as they walk out. Kate nudges him toward the press. The episode cuts to black before we hear what he says.
What it sets up
A Vice President about to speak publicly against his own President. An ambassador who no longer has a job. A new British PM with no history with any of them. And a President who has just been abandoned by her own people at a summit.
That is a season 5 premise if ever there was one. Netflix hasn't announced a renewal yet. Showrunner Debora Cahn has framed Grace's arc around one question, essentially whether something in her has changed. The finale suggests everyone around her has decided the answer is yes.
