RC17 Begins: Ram Charan and Sukumar Reunite, With T-Series and Mythri Behind Them
The Telugu film industry has a ritual for beginnings, and it is not a press release. It is a pooja, a clapboard and, this time, a father.
On 1 November, in Hyderabad, Megastar Chiranjeevi sounded the first clap for his son's next film. RC17, as it is tentatively called, reunites Ram Charan with director Sukumar for the first time since Rangasthalam.
"This one is extremely special," Ram Charan wrote afterwards. Sukumar said a new journey begins.
Who is behind it
Director: Sukumar
Star: Ram Charan
Producers: Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar, Mythri Movie Makers
Presented by: Gulshan Kumar, Bhushan Kumar and T-Series Films
Music rights: T-Series
Special Guest of Honour at the muhurat: Chiranjeevi
Why the alliance matters
The interesting word in the announcement is "presented." Mythri, the house behind Pushpa, is producing. T-Series, Bollywood's largest music label and a major Hindi film producer, is presenting and holds the music rights. That is the architecture of a film built from day one to travel north, not dubbed into Hindi as an afterthought.
It is also a pairing with history. Rangasthalam gave Ram Charan one of his most praised performances, a hearing-impaired villager in 1980s Godavari. Sukumar has since made Pushpa a national phenomenon. Each returns to the other larger than he left.
What has not been announced
Plenty. The heroine, the music director, the rest of the cast, the story and the shooting schedule are all unconfirmed. Devi Sri Prasad, Sukumar's regular composer, was initially attached, but his name was missing from the latest announcement, and reports suggest the team may look elsewhere. Reports also point to a 2028 release. None of this is official.
What is official is the pooja, the clap and the father in the frame. In Hyderabad, that is how a film announces it is real.
Ram Charan's last outing, Peddi, had its own share of noise.
