Param Sundari is one of those films that reminds you of popcorn, AC comfort, and cinema hall ushers more than the story itself. Why? Because everything outside the screen feels more memorable than what’s playing on it.
This romcom, which tries to blend a Delhi boy-meets-Malayali girl love story with endless Bollywood hat tips, ends up looking like a stitched-together mood board of clichés — colourful, loud, but ultimately hollow.
What’s the Story?
Param (Sidharth Malhotra) is a bratty Delhi venture capitalist and a textbook nepo-baby entrepreneur. Daddy gives him an ultimatum: prove his dating app Find Your Soulmate works by falling for his match. Enter Sundari (Janhvi Kapoor), a small-town Kerala girl with big responsibilities and sacrificed dreams.
What follows is every romcom stereotype in the book:
Filmy outsider trying to win over a “South Indian town”
Cultural references packed like Kerala tourism brochures
Elephant cameos (yes, there’s an elephant named Rukmani)
Onam competitions with Bollywood songs
A predictable love triangle and a conveniently precocious sister
The conflict? Sundari finds out Param’s ulterior motive. The resolution? Equally formulaic.
Why Param Sundari Fails
Borrowed Charisma: Every frame feels like it’s imitating a better Bollywood romcom (DDLJ, Chennai Express, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya).
Cultural Caricature: Kerala traditions are thrown in like items on a checklist rather than woven into the story.
No Chemistry: Despite the glamorous pairing of Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, sparks simply don’t fly.
No Twist, No Fun: Unlike recent romcoms experimenting with AI, time loops, or quirky gimmicks, Param Sundari has nothing new to offer.
The irony? A film about algorithm-driven love ends up feeling like it was generated by an algorithm itself.
Performances
Sidharth Malhotra: Looks good, plays SRK-lite, but brings nothing fresh.
Janhvi Kapoor: Earnest, but written like a patchwork of Bollywood heroines (Deepika in Chennai Express, Simran in DDLJ).
Sanjay Kapoor: Channels his inner Anupam Kher (from every KJo film).
Supporting cast? Forgettable, except maybe the elephant.
Verdict
Param Sundari is glossy but empty, colourful but soulless. It’s like visiting a mall instead of watching a movie everything looks branded, curated, and borrowed, but you leave with nothing that feels your own.
⭐ Rating: 1.5/5 – Watch it only if you’re in the mood for some unintentional comedy or want to play “spot the romcom reference.”
