NGMA Mumbai Announces Call for Artworks: "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: Through the Eyes of Art"
The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Mumbai, under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has launched an inspiring new initiative inviting artists to engage with India’s rich historical narrative. The gallery recently announced a national call for artwork submissions and artistic proposals centered on the life, vision, and enduring legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Titled "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: Through the Eyes of Art," the project seeks to bridge the gap between historical reverence and contemporary creative expression. Selected pieces will be curated by the NGMA Mumbai Curatorial Team to feature in an upcoming Legacy Exhibition, offering artists a prestigious platform to showcase their work in one of the country's premier art institutions.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj remains one of India's most celebrated historical figures, remembered not just for his military genius but for his progressive administration, fierce commitment to justice, and foundational role in establishing the Maratha Empire.
The NGMA is encouraging creators to dive deep into his multi-faceted legacy. Artists are invited to explore a wide array of sub-themes, including:
Swarajya & Nation Building: The ideals of self-rule and the establishment of a welfare state.
Leadership & Statesmanship: His administrative brilliance and progressive policies.
Forts & Maritime Legacy: The architectural marvels of his hill forts and his pioneering role as the "Father of the Indian Navy."

An Open Canvas for All Mediums
In a bid to attract a diverse range of artistic voices, the call for submissions is highly inclusive regarding medium. The NGMA curatorial team is accepting proposals across a broad spectrum of visual arts, including traditional paintings and printmaking, three-dimensional sculptures, immersive installations, mixed media, and other contemporary art practices.
