The Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery at Nariman Point recently played host to a profound artistic journey with the inauguration of "The Painted Window," a solo exhibition by esteemed artist and educator Nandita Desai. The event served as a bridge between history and contemporary art, drawing a distinguished crowd of art connoisseurs, dignitaries, and former students.
The exhibition was officially opened in the presence of Nawaz Modi Singhania, a renowned art collector and fitness icon; IAS Nidhi Choudhari, Director of NGMA Mumbai; theatre veteran Raell Padamsee; and philanthropist Dr. Aneel Kashi Murarka.

The Philosophy of the Window
Reflecting on the core inspiration behind the show, the opening remarks highlighted the deep psychological and architectural significance of the window. "There are two aspects to a window: one that looks out and one that looks in," the presentation noted.
The exhibition explores the idea that windows are more than just structural necessities; they are vessels for storytelling. Because almost every room or house requires a window, they become universal symbols of insight, access, and both entrance and exit. As the audio notes from the event suggested, "Every window that one sits next to or looks at has a story to tell because someone has looked out of it with certain thoughts they might have had."
Artistry Rooted in History

Desai, whose creative vision is heavily inspired by her background in History, has chosen a unique canvas for this series: vintage and handcrafted windows. By painting directly onto these reclaimed frames, she transforms functional objects into historical artifacts of emotion. Each piece acts as a metaphor, inviting the viewer to consider what lies beyond the glass and what remains reflected within.
A Legacy of Mentorship
The evening was also a celebration of Desai’s impactful career as a faculty member (associated with St. Xavier’s). The event highlighted a special full-circle moment, as Nawaz Modi Singhania, now a prominent figure in the art world, was once a student of Desai. This legacy of mentorship was a recurring theme, with attendees noting that Desai has helped shape and produce several great artists through her years of teaching.
An Invitation to Be Inspired
The atmosphere at the Bajaj Art Gallery was one of deep appreciation for the "beautiful metaphor" Desai has woven into every piece. Attendees, including NGMA Director Nidhi Choudhari, praised the collection for its uniqueness and depth.
The exhibition is a must-visit for seasoned collectors and aspiring artists alike. As noted during the opening, "If there are artists that would like to get inspired, we highly recommend they visit this particular exhibition."
