Indian independent cinema thrives on the voices that refuse to be boxed in. Megha Ramaswamy has long been one of those voices. Known for her bold, kaleidoscopic storytelling in projects like What Are the Odds? and Newborns, the writer-director is now taking her advocacy for fresh narratives a step further. This month, Ramaswamy officially joins the Advisory Board of the Bandra Film Festival (BFF).

Operated and sponsored by FilmKaravan, BFF has spent the last five years cultivating a sanctuary for emerging and established filmmakers alike. Ramaswamy’s appointment signals a deepening of the festival’s core mission: to carve out both digital and physical spaces where unconventional, independent stories can find their audience.

For Ramaswamy, the alignment is both professional and personal. Her creative partnership with FilmKaravan stretches back to 2019, when the production house co-produced her debut feature, What Are the Odds?, alongside Abhay Deol. Following a vibrant closing night gala premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, the film found a devoted younger audience upon its Netflix release in 2020.

“I deeply admire BFF’s commitment to nurturing this safe space for independent cinema,” Ramaswamy shared, reflecting on her new role. “I’m delighted to be joining the advisory board and to support a festival that believes so strongly in the power of cinema to open up conversations, challenge perspectives, and enrich our cultural landscape.”

The enthusiasm is entirely mutual. Festival organizers recognize that as the cinematic landscape shifts, surviving as an independent festival requires curators who genuinely understand the trenches of indie filmmaking.

An Evening of Indie Cinema at Houdini Mumbai

To celebrate this new chapter, BFF is stepping off the digital screen and into the city. On September 21, 2026, the festival will host a specially curated on-ground screening at Houdini Mumbai in Lower Parel.

The evening will be anchored by Ramaswamy’s own acclaimed short film, Lalanna's Song, featuring a powerhouse performance by Parvathy Thiruvothu. It will share the marquee with two other distinct indie voices: Salil Jason Fernandez’s Xarax (starring Neil Bhoopalam) and Nitesh Mohla’s Bhaisaab.

The Architect Behind the Festival: FilmKaravan

The engine driving BFF’s continued expansion is FilmKaravan, a production house that has consistently bridged the gap between rooted Indian stories and global audiences.

Best known for their International Emmy-winning debut series Delhi Crime—which recently released its third season in November 2025—FilmKaravan brings an industry-heavyweight pedigree to the indie festival circuit. As they develop their own diverse slate, including the upcoming independent feature Kurinji, their backing of BFF ensures that the ladder is left down for the next generation of storytellers.
