The Ramayan has been retold on screen more times than anyone can count, and there is another version in theatres from today. Mahakavya Shri Ramayan Katha is releasing across India in Hindi and Chhattisgarhi, and its makers say they have focused on emotion and devotion rather than spectacle.

What Makes This Version Different

Director Abhishek Singh has said the bhav of the katha, and the love between Shri Ram and Mata Sita, had to remain at the centre. Instead of leaning on heavy VFX, the film was shot at real locations in Chhattisgarh, the region traditionally linked to Mata Kaushalya, which gives the release a strong local connection.

Dev Sharma plays Lord Ram and Anjali Arora plays Goddess Sita. Rajniesh Duggal is Ravan, Sheel Verma plays Lakshman and Nirbhay Wadhwa plays Hanuman. Speaking about the role, Dev Sharma has said that Shri Ram's strength lies not only in what he can do, but in restraint and maryada.
