King's New Poster Feels Meh, and the Doomsday Clash Is Still On. Brave or Reckless?

I'm going to say it, and the SRK fan army is welcome to find me afterwards: the new King poster is meh.

There. I said it. I love Shah Rukh Khan. I grew up on him. I will watch King first day, first show. But this poster didn't make my heart race. It made me nod politely.

What the poster actually shows

Shah Rukh walking out of a burning structure. Silver hair. Rugged outfit. Bloodied face. And, the big moment, a red rose clenched between his teeth.

The line on it:

Aaj phir yaad aaya... Qaatil nahi... Aashiq hoon...

And with it, a reconfirmation of the date: 24 December 2026.

Why it didn't land for me

Look, plenty of people online loved it, and I get why. It's dramatic. It's SRK. The rose is a wink to the romantic hero he's been for thirty years.

But here's my problem:

  • We've seen this frame before. Fire behind, hero walking forward, bloodied face. That's been the action poster template since Pathaan and Jawan, and it's been copied by half the industry since.

  • The rose feels like a gimmick, not a story. "Qaatil nahi, aashiq hoon" is a fun line, but the image is trying to do romance and violence at the same time, and lands on neither.

  • It doesn't tell me anything new about the film. A great poster makes you ask a question. This one just confirms what we expected.

When you're King, "expected" is the one thing you can't afford to be.

The bigger story: the date hasn't moved

Honestly, I'm more surprised by the date than the design.

Shah Rukh shut down delay rumours himself during an #AskSRK session in September: "Sab ayega...24th Dec se pehle", and the new poster underlines it. King is staying on 24 December.

That puts it in the middle of the most dangerous December the Indian box office has seen in years:

  • Avengers: Doomsday releases on 18 December.

  • Dune: Part Three also lands on 18 December.

  • King follows six days later on 24 December.

Six days is not a gap. That's a shared run. King opens into Doomsday's second weekend, when Marvel fans are still filling IMAX and premium formats.

Why Hollywood is a real threat now

This is where the numbers get serious.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed ₹500 crore gross in India in just 12 days and became the highest-grossing Hollywood film ever in the country. Read that again. A Marvel film did numbers that most Bollywood films only dream of.

And Marvel's India audience isn't fading. Even the Avengers: Endgame re-release was racking up crores in advance bookings, with a Doomsday sneak peek as the bait. Doomsday is the follow-up to Endgame's universe-ending stakes. The hype is enormous.

So the fight isn't just over audiences. It's over screens, especially IMAX and premium formats, which hold onto a big Hollywood film for weeks.

Brave or reckless?

Let me argue both sides.

The case for brave:

  • Shah Rukh Khan is the one Indian star who can genuinely stand up to Marvel. Christmas is his kind of window.

  • Indian blockbusters are pulling huge numbers too. Jailer 2 has just crossed ₹400 crore in India.

  • Moving would look like fear, and SRK's brand is built on never looking scared.

  • Family audiences over the holidays are big enough for two giants.

The case for reckless:

  • Six days means King gets squeezed for premium screens in the biggest cities.

  • Opening reviews for Doomsday will dominate the conversation that week.

  • If Doomsday's word of mouth is huge, King gets the second-choice screens and the second-choice headlines.

  • And with this poster, King isn't exactly winning the marketing war yet.

My honest take

I think SRK will be fine. He usually is. But "fine" isn't the goal for a film this big. King needs to be an event, and so far the marketing hasn't felt like one.

If I were in that war room, I wouldn't move the date. I'd change the campaign. Drop a trailer that surprises people. Show us something about Suhana's role. Give Jaideep Ahlawat and Abhishek Bachchan a moment. Give us a reason to talk about King on 18 December, the day everyone else is talking about Doomsday.

Interesting times ahead. Popcorn's ready. Just give me a better poster.
