Karthik Subbaraj’s highly anticipated tenth directorial venture, Dorothy, has made a triumphant debut at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Tamil-language independent drama received a resounding standing ovation following its world premiere at Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre.

The screening marks a monumental milestone for the industry, as Dorothy is the first Tamil feature film to premiere at TIFF in over a decade. Showcased in the festival's prestigious Centrepiece section, the premiere was attended by Subbaraj alongside lead actors Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth, as well as producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain.

A Harsh Landscape of Friendship and Prejudice

Set in the early 1990s in rural Tamil Nadu, Dorothy explores profound themes of identity, caste, masculinity, and friendship. The narrative follows Karthi (Rishikanth) and Subbu (Sananth), two childhood friends navigating an unforgiving, scorched-earth reality defined by rigid patriarchal hierarchies and everyday brutality.

The boys' journey shifts dramatically from mere survival into dark reality when misfortune strikes Dorothy (played by Keerthy Suresh), a member of their household who has always treated them with gentleness.

Subbaraj, who penned and directed the film, described the narrative as deeply personal yet universally resonant. "Dorothy is a story that comes from a place and culture I know intimately, but its questions around friendship, prejudice and human connection are universal," the filmmaker shared in a statement.

A Legendary Musical Collaboration

Adding to the film's cinematic weight is its original score and soundtrack, composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja. Subbaraj noted that having the veteran composer's music accompany the film's international journey made the occasion incredibly special. The music has already generated immense interest in India, with the film's 18-track score recently being performed live continuously for 40 minutes at an exclusive concert in Chennai.

Presented by Jio Studios and produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor, and Achin Jain (Sikhya Entertainment) in association with Dhammam Films, Dorothy will move from its successful international festival run to a worldwide theatrical release on September 25, 2026.
