The Global South Film Festival: A Travelling Cinematic Movement Begins in India
A transformative new chapter in international cinema is officially underway with the introduction of the Global South Film Festival (GSFF). Driven by the powerful ethos "Where the Global South Tells Its Own Story," the GSFF is an India-convened, Global South-led travelling international film festival. This ambitious initiative is designed to forge deep connections between storytellers, cultural institutions, investors, platforms, and audiences across the region and the wider world.

With most of humanity living across the Global South, the festival aims to unite fast-changing production ecosystems and deep storytelling traditions. The ultimate goal is to build stronger south-south-world connections across stories, capital, and markets, giving filmmakers a platform that truly understands their cultural context.
A Festival That Travels: Nashik 2027 and Beyond
Unlike traditional film festivals permanently anchored to a single city, GSFF is built to move. India will host the inaugural 2027 edition, with Nashik proposed as the host city. As a cultural hub, Nashik provides a fitting launchpad for the event. However, the festival's journey will not stop there; Brazil is already slated as the next destination, with future editions set to travel across other Global South countries.
The Permanent Pillars: Women, Stories, and Capital
To ensure a permanent institutional lens across every edition, host city, and market, the GSFF is anchored by three vital pillars:
Women (Who tells our stories?): Ensuring female voices and leadership are central to the creative process.
Stories (What do we tell?): Amplifying authentic narratives from regions where the majority of humanity lives.
Capital (Who enables the story?): Connecting filmmakers with the vital financing and market structures needed to thrive.
Empowering Cinema: More Than Just Screenings
The GSFF operates on the foundational belief of "Cinema first. Everything else gives films a future". This is achieved through a comprehensive ecosystem that includes:
Watch & Celebrate: Dedicated film screenings alongside two distinct award systems—the GSFF Competition Awards for officially selected and screened films, and the broader Global South Film Awards (GSFA) recognizing outstanding regional cinema.
Connect & Develop: A bustling GSFF Film Market alongside targeted Story & Talent Labs designed to nurture emerging creators.
Enable: A Co-production & Finance Forum to facilitate tangible business deals and cross-border investments.
The festival will also feature curated showcase lenses focusing on Climate, Culture, and Cuisine, providing distinct pathways into the extraordinary diversity of Global South stories. In addition, the event will host specific Country, Embassy, and Cultural Showcases.
Crucially, while the GSFF places the Global South at the center, it does not exclude the Global North. Filmmakers, buyers, distributors, studios, investors, institutions, and media from anywhere in the world are encouraged to participate where relevant, ensuring a truly global exchange of art and commerce.
