The Platt family survives The End of Oak Street and makes it home to 1982, but Greg Platt, played by Ewan McGregor, doesn't make the trip back. He's killed by an Allosaurus before the family finds their way out, and the ending it built to is stranger and darker than a straightforward rescue.

Denise Platt (Anne Hathaway), son Brian (Christian Convery), Audrey, and neighbour Jeannette locate a wormhole near the Librarian's house, their one way back to the present. Getting to it means fighting through a gauntlet that includes a giant snake and repeated pterosaur attacks.

The wormhole doesn't wait for anyone

The portal home appears and disappears in multi-second intervals rather than staying open, which is what makes the climax genuinely tense instead of a formality. Brian's first attempt to jump through fails and he injures his leg, forcing the family into a second, more desperate attempt to get everyone through together before it closes for good.

That structure, an unreliable window home rather than a stable exit, is what turns the third act into an actual survival sequence instead of a countdown.

The pizza order is the actual twist

Back in 1982, in the film's closing minutes, Denise calls to order a pizza. That single domestic act delays the original Greg just long enough that he's never transported to the prehistoric past in the first place, unmaking the entire event the family just survived.

The film doesn't let that read as a clean fix. The implication it leaves hanging is that other versions of Denise, Brian, Audrey, and the rest of Flowervale met the same fate the family just escaped, with no pizza order to save them and no rescue coming. There's no post-credits scene walking that back. The dread is the ending.
