When Carter invites Oreana over, a character named Miguel quickly shuts down the visit. Shortly after, the police raid the property. During the chaos, Dwight rushes to protect his beloved cat and is shot by the local sheriff. He bleeds to death while a traumatised Carter watches. At the station, the sheriff spins a false narrative justifying the shooting and threatens Carter. If Carter stays quiet, the sheriff will wipe his name from the official report. Terrified and isolated, Carter takes the deal. He leaves the episode physically free but completely broken, carrying a secret that places him at the mercy of a corrupt police force. The peace found in Episode 5 is entirely temporary. The Dutton trio has traded their financial ruin for moral and physical jeopardy, perfectly setting up the explosive back half of the season.
