“‘Main Hoon Punjab’ has been Diljit Dosanjh's personal motto for years. A report now claims he gave up Indian citizenship in 2022. The tension between those two facts is the entire story.”

A man in a white shirt and red turban stands by a brick wall. The background is a dark wooden structure, and the mood is calm and serene.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED

An Indian Express report published May 14, 2026 claims that Diljit Dosanjh acquired US citizenship in 2022 and has since been travelling to India on an e-visa using his US passport, not an Indian passport. His last Indian passport was reportedly issued in Mumbai in 2018. At the time of acquiring US citizenship, he reportedly listed a five-bedroom bungalow in California as his residence. His wife Sandeep Kaur is also reportedly a US national. Under Indian law, acquiring foreign citizenship automatically terminates Indian citizenship — dual citizenship is not permitted under Articles 9 of the Constitution and Section 9 of the Citizenship Act 1955. When Punjab civil society group Jaago Punjab Manch recently asked Dosanjh to enter Punjab politics, he dismissed the idea on X, writing: “Kadey v nahi.” The report later clarified that even if he wanted to enter Indian politics in future, he would need to reacquire Indian citizenship first. Diljit has not publicly confirmed or denied the citizenship report.

THE INSIDER TAKE

The citizenship revelation matters more for what it reveals about the Bollywood-diaspora brand complex than for any legal consequence. Diljit Dosanjh's entire commercial persona is built on Punjabi rootedness — “Main Hoon Punjab” is not just a catchphrase, it is the load-bearing identity of his global brand. The fact that he has apparently lived, legally, as a US citizen for three years while maintaining that persona is not hypocrisy in a criminal sense — millions of the diaspora do the same. But it disrupts the unambiguous Punjabi-Indian narrative he projects, especially at a time when he was being floated as a political candidate. The gap between the persona and the documentation is the controversy.

WHY THIS MATTERS

If confirmed, Diljit's US citizenship formally closes the door on any near-term political entry without a lengthy repatriation process. It also forces a reckoning with how Indian celebrity identity works in a globalised era — where major stars can be simultaneously culturally Indian, legally American, and commercially a brand spanning both worlds. Bollywood has not had to confront this question directly before.

Diljit's upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga — directed by Imtiaz Ali, releasing June 12, 2026 — translates as “I Will Come Back.” The film's title, in this specific news cycle, reads differently than it did when it was announced.
