Dia Mirza has spent 25 years in Bollywood playing women who are resilient, deeply in love, ambitious, and too layered to be filed away neatly. We first encountered her on-screen as the innocent Reena Malhotra in the romantic cult classic which also marked her Bollywood debut, and now she’s come far enough to play resilient women that have cast an impression in real lives and reel lives.

If there’s a thread in Mirza’s choice of roles, it is undoubtedly the instinct to play women with agency. She has noted in recent interviews that she no longer judges a character by its screen time, but rather focuses on the emotional impact it brings to the overall story.
