If our earlier celebration was a masterclass in intimate, eco-friendly warmth, our next stop today showcased the absolute pinnacle of Mumbai’s festive spirit: monumental scale, architectural brilliance, and a sweeping reverence for India's cultural heritage.

Just a few hours ago, Kenneth Sir and I had the deep privilege of visiting the famed Vandre Paschim Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in the heart of Bandra West. This iconic pandal operates under the visionary guidance of its Chief Patron (Pramukh Margdarshak), the Honorable Cabinet Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar ji. As the Cabinet Minister of Electronics, IT, AI, and Cultural Affairs for Maharashtra, Adv. Ashish Shelar ji has transformed this space into a landmark institution—a shining beacon of devotion and community unity that we were honored to experience firsthand today.

The Somnath Vision

As a visual designer, I am constantly analyzing spatial layouts and production design, but what this mandal has achieved for its glorious 30th year left me speechless. This year, they have meticulously crafted a majestic architectural homage to Gujarat’s revered Somnath Temple.

The sheer scale and attention to detail today were staggering. The towering shikhara (spire), the intricately carved pillars, and the sprawling sanctum were constructed with such profound artistry that it genuinely mirrored the stone-carved grandeur of the ancient shrine. Warm, golden illumination highlighted the intricate faux-stone carvings, creating a divine, ethereal glow around the majestic Ganesh idol seated at the center. It was a breathtaking marriage of traditional craftsmanship and flawless art direction, championed by a leader who deeply understands the importance of preserving our cultural fabric.

A Convergence of Devotion and Leadership

What makes the Vandre Paschim pandal truly extraordinary is the atmosphere cultivated by Adv. Ashish Shelar ji. It is a rare, sacred space where the highest echelons of national governance, the brightest stars of Bollywood, and everyday community devotion seamlessly unite.

As Kenneth Sir and I navigated the beautifully decorated pathways, the hospitality was exceptionally warm and humbling. Adv. Ashish Shelar ji, alongside his wife Adv. Pratima and their son Omkar, personally welcomed guests with traditional grace, offering bouquets and heartfelt greetings before the deity. Watching a leader of his immense stature—a distinguished MLA and a Special Invitee to the BJP National Executive—greet every individual with such grounding humility and familial care was profoundly inspiring.

Seeing Kenneth Sir navigate this space today, exchanging respectful greetings and taking in the sheer cultural weight of the event, was a phenomenal learning experience. He has always championed the idea that culture and community are deeply intertwined, and looking around this grand pandal, that philosophy was playing out in real-time under the exemplary stewardship of Adv. Ashish Shelar ji.

As we finally stepped out of the magnificent temple structure and back onto the bustling streets of Bandra, the impact of the evening lingered. It is spaces like these—where world-class artistry meets deep-rooted faith and visionary public service—that make Mumbai’s Ganeshotsav an unparalleled cultural phenomenon.
