I Hadn't Watched Bigg Boss in Five Years. Then the Bigg Boss 20 Promos Happened
Confession time.
I hadn't watched Bigg Boss in about five years. Not out of snobbery, I promise. I just drifted. The fights started feeling the same, the tasks felt recycled, and life got busy.
And then, somewhere in the middle of October, the Bigg Boss 20 promos started showing up on my feed. One. Then another. Then I found myself opening JioHotstar on a random

Wednesday night like it was a habit I'd never broken.
I'm not proud. But I'm also not sorry. Because whoever is cutting these promos is doing some of the best work on Indian television right now.
What's going on in the house
Quick catch-up for fellow lapsed viewers:
Bigg Boss 20 premiered on 6 September 2026. Salman Khan is back for his seventeenth straight season.
It streams on JioHotstar at 9pm and airs on Colors at 10:30pm.
The house includes names like Love Gill, Tanmay Singh (Scout), Mahhi Vij, Aasif Khan, Qazi, Arishfa Khan and, yes, Mary Kom. A six-time world boxing champion in the Bigg Boss house was not on my 2026 bingo card.
The promos that got me
The Rohit Shetty Weekend Ka Vaar. With Salman absent, Rohit Shetty stepped in as guest host and the promo went straight for the throat. No filter, he warned. Then he questioned the much-discussed "brother-sister" bond between Scout and Love Gill, pointing out that their closeness under a blanket didn't look great from the outside. You could feel the room go silent through the screen.
The girlfriend twist. Days later, Scout's girlfriend Kaashvi turned up on Weekend Ka Vaar questioning his closeness with Love. Promo editors love a slow burn, and this was a two-part masterclass.
The headbutt. A joke between Aasif Khan and Qazi about a "dil ka daura" escalated into an actual headbutt. That's the kind of moment a promo team dreams of, and they milked every second of the build-up.
Why these promos work
I've spent a lot of time thinking about why I, a grown adult with deadlines, keep clicking. Here's my theory.
1. They sell a question, not an answer. The best promos never show you the whole fight. They show you the moment right before it. Your brain fills in the rest and then demands closure.
2. Sound design is doing half the work. That pause before the music hits. The sudden silence. The bass drop on a dramatic line. Somebody in that edit suite understands rhythm.
3. They're built for the feed. Short, vertical-friendly, punchy. These aren't TV trailers anymore. They're reels with a production budget, designed to stop your thumb.
4. They know the internet's language. The framing, the reaction shots, the timing all feel like they were cut by someone who lives online. Because they probably were.
The editor deserves a raise
I mean this sincerely. Reality TV is often dismissed as trash, but the craft behind it is serious. Turning 24-hour footage of people arguing about dishes into 45 seconds that make a lapsed viewer like me come back mid-week is a genuine skill.
Marketing people talk endlessly about "hooks". This team is building hooks every single day, on deadline, with footage they can't control. That's elite.
It's the same thing we keep seeing across entertainment. Whether it's brands building lore instead of ads or a show being won or lost in its first three seconds on Instagram, the promo is now as important as the product.
Will I keep watching?
Honestly? Probably, at least until the finale. The promos got me in. Whether the episodes keep me is another matter. But if you work on the Bigg Boss promo team and you're reading this: I see you. Ask for that raise. Show them this article.
