Eighteen years after Aang and Team Avatar last graced our screens, the franchise's first-ever movie has landed — and it's already streaming. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender premiered on Paramount+ on July 25, and for anyone with a Prime Video account, it's also available to rent or purchase, or to stream through the Paramount+ Amazon Channel add-on. If you grew up on the original Nickelodeon series, this is the reunion you've been waiting nearly two decades for.

What Is Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender About?

Set thirteen years after the Hundred Year War ended, the film catches up with an adult Aang, still carrying the weight of being the last surviving Airbender after the Fire Nation wiped out his people. The story kicks off when Aang discovers Tagah, another Airbender who has survived in ice-bound stasis — much like Aang himself once was. Together, they set off in search of an ancient staff that could bring the Air Nomads back from extinction, all while a mysterious group of non-benders called The Denied tries to get to it first.

Who's In It?

The voice cast blends familiar names with new additions. Singer and The Traitors alum Eric Nam voices Aang, while Dave Bautista lends his voice to Tagah, the newly discovered Airbender. Jessica Matten and Román Zaragoza return as Katara and Sokka respectively, with Dionne Quan back as Toph. Freida Pinto joins the cast as Sonam, a mysterious past Avatar who communes with Aang, alongside additional voices from Steven Yeun, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Ke Huy Quan.

Where and When to Watch It

The film had a brief, awards-qualifying theatrical run in select cities from July 24 to 30, but for most audiences worldwide, this is a streaming-first release. It's available now on Paramount+, and on Prime Video through the Paramount+ Amazon Channel or as a digital rental/purchase. The release itself had a bumpy road to get here — an unauthorized leak back in April led to an arrest and pushed Paramount to move up the streaming premiere and scale back the film's theatrical ambitions.

How Is It Being Received?

Reviews so far have landed somewhere between nostalgic and mixed. Critics are largely unified in praising the film's animation and action sequences, calling them some of the most visually ambitious the franchise has produced, with several highlighting an opening recap sequence that compresses all three original seasons into under a minute of gorgeous, minimal imagery. Where reviewers differ is on substance: some feel the film leans too heavily on fan-service and nostalgia without doing enough to justify new stakes, while others found the emotional through-line, especially Aang's continued grief over his lost people, genuinely affecting. On Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus reads it as a comforting, visually stunning return that may feel more like a reunion special than an essential new chapter.

Should You Watch It?

If you're coming in as a longtime fan of the original series, this is very much a movie made for you — it assumes you already know these characters and rewards that familiarity rather than spending time re-explaining the world. If you've never watched the show, you'll likely want to start there first; the film doesn't do much hand-holding for newcomers. Either way, with a new spin-off series, Avatar: Seven Havens, already confirmed for an October debut, this movie looks less like a one-off and more like the opening chapter of the franchise's next era.
