ASCENSION: Mumbai's Afghan Church Reimagined Through Celestial Light

This August, one of South Mumbai’s most striking historic landmarks is stepping into a whole new light. From August 27th to 29th, the iconic Afghan Church in Colaba will be transformed into an incandescent canvas for ASCENSION, a stunning indoor projection mapping experience.  

Spearheaded by the Floating Canvas Company (FCC) as part of the Mumbai Light Festival, this marks the first time an immersive light installation of this scale has been staged inside a Grade 1 heritage structure in the city.  

What to Expect

Inspired by humanity's timeless fascination with looking beyond, ASCENSION is designed as an immersive meditation on light, space, and wonder. Visitors are invited to take a seat inside the church and simply soak in the sensory experience.  

Rather than treating the 19th-century church merely as a blank backdrop, the creative team has used the building's distinct Early English Gothic Revival architecture as part of the story. Using high-powered 50K lumen projectors, cosmic imagery—clouds, stars, radiant energy, and infinite skies—will flow seamlessly across the soaring arches and ceiling, complementing the landmark's renowned stained-glass windows.  

The creators aimed to highlight the built-in nuances of the church, using light to bring out architectural aspects that visitors might otherwise walk past and overlook.
