50 Years of ANK: Historic Hindi Theatre Group Celebrates with Epic 'Veera Rani Abbakka'

Mumbai's theatre scene is set to witness a monumental milestone this October as ANK, the legendary Hindi theatre group founded by late visionary Dinesh Thakur in 1976, celebrates its 50th anniversary. To honor five decades of unparalleled contribution to Indian performing arts, the group is launching STAGE 50 – The Dinesh Thakur Legacy Festival. The crown jewel of this celebration is a brand-new, spectacular 50th-year production: Veera Rani Abbakka – The Queen of the Seas, The Fearless Flame of Ullala.

The Legacy of Dinesh Thakur and STAGE 50

Since its inception, ANK has been a powerhouse in Hindi theatre, delivering 88 unique productions and staging over 7,700 performances across India and the globe. Until his passing in 2012, Dinesh Thakur was the beating heart of ANK, nurturing generations of actors and cultivating a massive audience for Hindi stage plays. STAGE 50 is both a tribute to Thakur’s enduring legacy and a bold step into the future. The festival will feature a curated repertoire of ANK’s most beloved classic plays, including Beewion Ka Madarsa and Sita Banbas, playing alongside their ambitious new historical drama.

'Veera Rani Abbakka': A Story of Fierce Resistance

Written, designed, directed, and led on stage by Preeta Mathur Thakur (President of ANK), Veera Rani Abbakka resurrects the awe-inspiring true story of the 16th-century queen of coastal Karnataka. Long before the Indian independence movement gained momentum, Rani Abbakka recognized the existential threat posed by Portuguese colonial expansion. Refusing to surrender her kingdom's sovereignty and its lucrative maritime trade, she built a formidable naval fleet, forged strategic alliances, and utilized guerrilla warfare to repel foreign forces. Her bravery earned her the title Abhaya Rani—the Fearless Queen.

Preeta Mathur Thakur explains the significance of the play:

"Rani Abbakka’s story stayed with me because she saw the danger of colonial domination at a time when others were willing to compromise. That a woman from a small coastal kingdom could stand up to a powerful foreign force and fight for the sovereignty of her people is a story that deserves to be known, remembered, and experienced on stage."

To capture the essence of coastal Karnataka, the production masterfully integrates the vibrant, high-energy theatrical traditions of Yakshagana, blending rich oral history, dynamic movement, and spectacular music.

Vikrant’s Long-Awaited Return to the Hindi Stage

A major highlight of this anniversary production is the highly anticipated casting of actor Vikrant. A prominent and acclaimed figure on the English stage, Vikrant is finally making his return to Hindi theatre after a 15-year wait. His transition back to his Hindi theatre roots adds immense gravitas and a fresh dynamic to Veera Rani Abbakka. Fans of his English stage work are eager to see his commanding presence translated into this culturally rich, Hindi historical epic, marking one of the most exciting theatrical crossovers of the 2026 season.

Mumbai Premiere and National Tour

The STAGE 50 festival will take over some of Mumbai's most iconic cultural venues throughout September and October, before embarking on the Dinesh Thakur Legacy Tour 2026–27. The national tour will kick off with Sita Banbas in Heggodu, Karnataka (for NINASAM) on October 4, followed by a multi-play showcase in Jaipur this November.
